Walter D. Webb Scholarship

Walter D. Webb was born in Birch Tree, Shannon County, Missouri on Sept. 18, 1917. He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1939 with a degree in education. His father and younger brother also graduated from the University. His father was Superintendent of the Shannon County School District. Mr. Webb went into the military and served five years in the Army Adjutant General Corps during World War II. After the war, Mr. Webb and his wife, Irene, and daughter, Alberta, moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he worked for the U.S. Post Office. He retired in 1972. Mr. Webb was an avid reader and master storyteller. Many of his stories of growing up in early Missouri have been documented by his family. He was a big supporter of continuing education and followed closely the growth of colleges in the Wichita area along with his alma mater, Southeast Missouri State University. Mr. Webb died on Jan. 17, 2010 and is buried at the Webb family plot in Birch Tree, Missouri alongside his wife and daughter.
