Meghan Herndon

Meghan Herndon

Meghan Herndon began her senior season as a starting defender on the Southeast Missouri State University soccer team in 2012. Tragedy struck on September 9, 2012, when Meghan was involved in an accident that eventually took her life. On September 20, 2012, Meghan gave the ultimate gift of life by becoming an organ and tissue donor, continuing to make an impact on other lives.

“Impossible is nothing” was the mantra by which Megan lived her life, one that she put into practice at Southeast. She balanced her demanding soccer schedule with a rigorous academic curriculum. After beginning her career as a walk-on, Meghan’s will and determination made her a mainstay on the Southeast defense, ultimately earning her a scholarship. She stepped onto the field in 55 matches during her career, starting 39 of those contests. Off the field, Meghan was a nursing major who was placed on the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll three times. She was also a three-time Southeast Scholar-Athlete. She strived for nothing but the best, and her impact on others was evident by her involvement outside the classroom and off the soccer field with anyone in which she came in contact.

The Redhawks honored Meghan by retiring her No. 2 jersey during their alumnae match on September 20, 2013. Meghan’s family is hoping her legacy will live on through her scholarship and that the recipient will demonstrate similar traits, characteristics and qualities that Meghan stood for in her short but very vibrant life.
